Sweet Quote: Be a Fruit Loop in a World Full of Cheerios

Well, you might think you know the reason that we love this sweet quote: Be a Fruit Loop in a world full of Cheerios and, okay, maybe you do. For starters, Fruit Loops are sweet and colorful and fun! Not that we are not big fans of Cheerios, because we are, but Fruit Loops in a world full of Cheerios stand out. Just like Sugar Lulu girls do!

Be a Fruit Loop in a world full of Cheerios–and rock!

Therefore, we want to encourage all of you to be a Fruit Loop in a world full of Cheerios. To be sweet and colorful. Not to be afraid to be different. To embrace being your own person. To show your true colors and to be able to stand out from the crowd. Finally, to speak out about your beliefs and support others who might be different too. Sugar Lulu girls know it’s okay to pave their own way—with friends, fashion and activities. Be who you are and be proud of it!

Dare to be different and the same

Still there is also the importance of being able to fit in, even though you may not blend in. Like Fruit Loops, you may share some of the characteristics of others (they’re round with holes like Cheerios!) and it’s good to embrace those. Here’s the thing: You don’t need to be different for the sake of it. Use your differences for good like making a statement or taking a stand. Don’t use them just to clash with others.

We love our sweet sayings all the more when they are literally so super sweet!

It’s a New School Year–Try Some New After School Activities Too

New (School) Year, New You…Well, it’s a new school year. That means new classes, new teachers, new classrooms and maybe some new friends too. So fun! While you’ve got all these new things happening this new school year, we say add one more! Test out never-before-tried activities that make you move add a balance to days filled with math and English.

Maybe there is something you want to get involved with but are hesitant because you were the lone chica. Or it’s that you don’t think you will be good at it. Or perhaps you had no idea what an activity truly entailed. No need to fret—we have the 411 on two of the most popular post-school pursuits so you can try to determine this new school year if any makes you feel like you want to try. Plus once you know just what you want, we bet others follow you. With this new determination, you’ll start out solo and meet a new bestie there in no time.

Dance

Even if all of your friends are big-time dance girls, you don’t know the difference between a ball change and thunder clap. Still, you want to dance this new school year? That’s super cool—it’s a great workout, mood lifter and so fun to move to the music. Then there are the cute clothes made just for flexibility. What’s more, there are a range of dance styles and classes to take, from jazz, to lyrical, ballet to hip hop, tap and more. Classes can be once a week or sometimes more and typically there is a recital at year end to show off all you know in a spectacular display of talent.

For girls who ultimately pursue dance big-time, there are dance companies—multiple classes at more advanced levels—to try out for and competition teams as well. But to start, sign up for just one style if you like—and give it a try.

Yoga

This meditative activity is good for your mind and bod. It is a fabulous low key workout, stengthener and toner. The equipment (mats and outfits) are oh-so-cute and yoga is a perfect way to chill after a day of school or a stressful exchange with siblings or hormonal friends. Plus yoga has a language, moves and poses all it’s own—think downward dog, tree, frog, warrior, half moon and more—so every pose or mantra you master will make you feel majorly successful. Another benefit: Many yoga spots have healthy juice and smoothie bars on site or nearby. Yum.

Customize Your School Supplies in Fabulous DIY Style

One of the best parts about going back to school is shopping for the rad new school supplies that you get to use in class, put up in your locker and carry around as swag in your backpack. Only problem? Typically others have been to the local spot for school supplies too or hit up the same online store you did so they’ve got the same stuff. No worries. You can personalize  your school supplies so they reflect you and your inner design star. Not only do you get to strut your style by customizing your school supplies but ultimately you can also identify what’s yours from those pesky people who love to “borrow” but not return.

Pens and Pencils

For starters, wrap pens and pencils in ribbons and top them with a character eraser or a faux fur pom-pom. Maybe consider color coordinating the ribbon with the accoutrement on top. Or use metal stamps to hammer designs into wood pencils or even “write your name.” Another idea? Download these pencil wraps in four different prints that fit perfectly on standard number 2 pencils. Just cut out and affix with a swipe of modge podge.

Books

Cover textbooks to make the perfect palette for favorite quotes, a poem, pics of friends or a sketch/drawing. Measure a piece of heavy duty paper—we especially like white and kraft color—that’s one inch longer and wider all around than your book when it’s open with both covers splayed out. Fold in sides of paper so that it is aligned on top and bottom of book. Fold over the covers of both books and tape to secure. You can also create fun book marks to keep track of your where you are in reading assignments. These downloadable ones that you add a decorative ribbon to work well on both textbooks and English class novels.

Folders

In addition, personalize your folders by marking up with strips of washi tape that comes in tons of fun colors and designs. Or go a more organized route with specialized printable labels that mark your subject front and center.

Friend Top 10

We love to celebrate everything—especially our friends. And we like to do it just a little more when international Friendship Day hits the calendar this month. And why not? Our friends are our go-tos for everything from secrets to sleepovers, giggles, shopping and more! Here, the top ten reasons to prove you are besties!

  1. You tell each other everything Including the same story, over and over again.
  2. Mi Casa su Casa. You are just as comfortable hanging out at her house with her family (and super cute older brother) as you are at/with yours.
  3. You think alike. You name it: clothes, movies, friends, boys—you are always on the same wavelength. And when you’re not, you appreciate what the other one thinks.
  4. You both are really happy for the other one’s success. There’s no weird jealousy between the two of you. You love how happy she gets when she gets good grades and she is your biggest cheerleader when you score big at dance competitions.
  5. She is the BEST gift giver. She just gets you
  6. Her lips are sealed. You can trust her with your deepest secrets and she knows she can trust you.
  7. She can always make you laugh. Even when you are having a yuck day, she can get a giggle from you—and you like to make her smile too.
  8. You can count on each other. Need help studying or doing an annoying chore? You are there for each other no matter what.
  9. You trust her opinion. Sometimes parents and siblings just don’t get it. But she does and you value what she has to say a lot.

It’s official. You’ve got the friendship bracelet to prove it—and they’re matching, of course, because you love the same things

Yoga 101

We think yoga rocks! For starters we love how good it is for us—mind, body and spirit. Doing yoga helps build strength, stamina, mindfulness and makes us super focus, which is good not only for school but all of our activities too. Plus we live for the clothes that come with it. The cutest and comfiest leggings are de rigueur so not only do you look super stylish but you also feel so good. They’re also so inspiring to go into a downward dog and chant a mantra. Never done yoga (only wear the clothes?)—we gotchu. Here, a super quick 101 to bring you up to speed so now you can look and play the part.

  1. Create a cool space to set the mood. Even if you don’t have a dedicated room, find a space in your home, like a little nook by a window with a view of a tree that makes you feel calm, and set up there.
  2. Get geared up. A yoga mat defines your space and don’t need to be pricey. Keep a water bottle nearby to hydrate and wear comfy, stretchy and cute clothes to feel inspired.
  3. Choose a mantra. The word mantra actually comes from the Sanskrit language that translates to “instrument of sound.” It is a word, sound or phrase that makes you happy or content and helps to focus during yoga or mediation. Some suggestions? Sweet, sweet life, yuuuum, friends are for life to name a few!
  4. Know basic poses. Even if you’re not one of our Sugar Lulu dance girls, that doesn’t mean you can’t strike a fabulous yoga pose. To familiarize yourself with some of the basic poses and techniques there are tons of books out there or just simply search on line. Some of the key terms to check out: Child’s Pose, Mountain Pose, Downward Dog, Warrior, Tree Pose, Bridge Pose (think back bend with no hands!), Triangle Pose, Seated Twist and Cobra.

Namaste.

Take Time to be Creative

Summer time typically means no school stress—even summer school tends to be less crazy than homework demands during the regular school year. Take some of that extra time and energy to be creative and inspired. Learn a new skill. Start focusing on a new hobby. Think about how you can make a difference.

Start by thinking about something you have always wanted to do but could not really spend enough time on. Or, look at an activity you have always admired someone else for taking part in. You certainly don’t have to master a skill—but that’s totally fab if you do!—just experiencing a part of it is an amazing start. Take dance for example: Just because your friends are at their studio 24/7, you can take one class over the summer or even teach yourself in your room by watching You Tube. Your efforts will feel oh-so good. Choreograph a dance…check!

Another feel good activity that really taps into your creative side is photography. Perfect landscape pics or some of your favorite peeps. Practice on a real camera or on your phone camera. You’d be surprised by all the likes and comments you’ll start getting!

And while we know it’s not time for school yet, enjoy a little free-form writing. If you are a journal keeper then you know what we mean. It’s fun to write about your day or your feelings. But take it one step further. Find a special notepad or notebook, just for this project. Try to turn your notes into a story. Come up with a title, develop your characters and if you want, share it with family and friends.

Then turn in your pencil and paper for a different kind of paper and markers and draw something special. Start with doodles if you want, then move on to something more like landscapes, a portrait, your favorite accessory. The only mistake you can make is to think your pieces have to be perfect, because they don’t. That’s the beauty in art.

Beach Day

If you’re lucky enough to be spending any time by the beach this summer, it’s a fabulous opportunity to be fashion-forward and decked out with must-have gear.

Bag and Towel

For starters, take a good bag that’s holds a lot but is also easy to clear of sand when you get home. Fill it with an oversized towel (one that’s round is super on-trend) that you can sit on in the sand and wrap yourself in after riding the waves.

Goggles and Clothes

Pack a smaller bag to fit inside the beach bag

with items like goggles and a change of clothes that you can also put a wet bathing suit in after you change.

Stuff to do in the Sand

If you’re spending the day at the beach, pack some stuff to keep you busy. A good book and waterproof speakers are two good ideas. And if you’re going to spend your time just sitting in the sun, pack plenty of sunscreen, even for those hazy days.

Snacks and Sips

It’s important to keep yourself hydrated and nourished when out in the sun. Pack some snacks like fruits and nuts, energy bars, even PB&J sandwiches (cut them into shapes with cookie cutters to be super cute).

Making Memories

Make sure to take plenty of pictures in plenty of poses because beach pics get some of the highest likes on insta—and if you’re there for sunset, then that’s just bonus points!

Summer Sleepover Fun

With school way in your review mirror and next year not even a blip on your radar yet, sleepovers are not just for weekends anymore. With a week’s worth of nights that you can hang overnight with your bffs, there’s lots of planning to be done. After all, there’s so much more fun to be had than just sitting on your phones all night. There’s always time to post to insta later!

Make a Plan/Plan a Theme

Write out a rough plan including a timeline for how you want the evening to unfold. Include activities, snack times and movie time. No need to stick to it exactly, but it’s a good guide to have if there is any lull during the night.

Decorate Your Space

Hang up welcome signs, fun posters or pics of your pals as festive décor for the night. You can even arrange sleeping bags or blankets in a fun pattern, like a spiral, or set out little gifts along a wall or on the sleeping area.

Plan Activities

No matter how “mature” your friends may be, everyone loves a creative project—especially if you ask them to drop their cell phones in a bag by the door (you can have people pick from the cell sack later and whose cell phone they pick is who they sleep next to!). Don’t expect people to be spending the whole night at it, but a quick project is always a good time. Think of beading bracelets or necklaces, decoupaging wooden frames with magazine cutouts, or playing fab card games.

Movie Snacks

No sleepover feels just right without the perfect just-for-girls movie. And no just-for-girls movie feels just right without a big bowl of popcorn. Pop enough for everyone and then create a self-serve popcorn bar where your bffs can help themselves, complete with mini bowls and toppings including melted milk chocolate, melted white chocolate, caramel sauce and mini M&Ms. Yummy!
