Top Tips to Shoot a Video Haul

Hey girlies! One of the most fun parts about shopping is sharing what you’ve just scored. No wonder video hauls are one of our most favorite videos to watch. Want to get in on the action but don’t know where to start? We’ve got you with this post about the top tips to shoot a video haul.

One of the most important of the top tips to shoot a video haul includes keeping the video to  about 10 minutes long. It’s not necessary to be any longer because you might lose viewers‘ attention. BUT that doesn’t mean you have to worry about that while filming. Since we are sure you are super vid savvy, you can edit, cut, speed up, add graphics etc. later. So just keep rolling and worry about the timing after.

Show your package

The first top tip to shoot a video haul is to show off the package. Whether it’s a delivery on your doorstep or the most bomb “I’m def going to use this to hold my lunch tomorrow,” shopping bag, viewers want to see it. Tell them where your haul is from as you are displaying the packaging.

Set up staging spot

You are going to need space to spread out and either a full length mirror (for fashion) or a vanity mirror for makeup and hair.

Open your box

Keep the suspense up but not for too long. Make sure you’ve got the right materials–like a scissor or box cutter to open and unwrap. You can also take any tissue wrapped goods out of your bags at this point. All the while discuss why you like the brand or their products. Not only does this give viewers more info, but it might get you on the brand’s radar.

The Big Reveal

With a little dramatic effect–like music or close ups to your excited face–take out the first item to share. Lay it out, hold it up, try it on and take a spin around in it. For beauty or hair, show the package, the label, the tool (like the cute pink rollers here), or a dollop of squeeze of the product itself.

Continue with remaining items

Continue step 4 with remaining items, but since this is a post about the top tips to make a video haul, remember people are tuned in for a reason. They want the specifics of what you got, what  inspired you, what it looks like, how it works and more. So while showing off, sound off with all the info.

Share a code if you have

Mention any promo codes you know of and how long each is supposed to last. When you get enough followers, brands might even give you a code of your own to share!).

Come up with a catchy sign off

Can be short and sweet but be sure to tell peeps to follow you and then give them a hint at what’s to come next. That’s the best top tip to shoot a video haul–keep them coming back for more!

Pastels From the Runway

Spring is almost here and with that comes so much besides just the clocks changing. There’s warmer weather, countdown to summer and looks we can take from the spring runway. And this year there were super sweet candy-colored pastels from the runway. And we loved them.

Sure you’re likely not going to be dipping into a wardrobe of Preen, Hermes, Chanel and Victoria Beckham that came down the catwalks. But you can use them to inspire what you will be wearing–from clothes to shoes to what you do with your hair and makeup. Check out what we are talking about.

Pastel Pieces

Look for on-trend pastel jeans like some of the pastels from the runway. But don’t think you need to go head to toe in these pretty light hues. One of our fashion bibles, Teen Vogue, suggests pairing them with a metallic or neutral top.

So you don’t run the risk of looking like the Easter bunny with the pastels from the runway, just accessorize in pastels. Think of  sunglasses, a fabulous scarf or even a pair of light pink, baby blue or mint green sneaks.

Any pastel top from a crop top to a light sweater, pairs perfectly with capri jeans or a jean skirt. Match the outfit with silver toed ballet flats or a the ubiquitous pair of cool white tennis shoes.

Bring your workout wear into spring and fashion with pastel patterns. Pastels with flowers, rainbows, unicorns, candy and more lighten and brighten any after school activity.

Pastel Tresses

One of the hottest hair trends is rainbow highlights and balayage. Do it with just a touch of one color or subtly work a few pieces in. You will definitely be feeling spring with these pastels from the runway in no time.

Pastel makeup

We don’t think you need anything to make yourself more beautiful, but if you’re going to wear makeup try some pastel shades. A swipe of baby blue shadow or barely there pink lipstick is subtle and super flattering.

It’s a New School Year–Try Some New After School Activities Too

New (School) Year, New You…Well, it’s a new school year. That means new classes, new teachers, new classrooms and maybe some new friends too. So fun! While you’ve got all these new things happening this new school year, we say add one more! Test out never-before-tried activities that make you move add a balance to days filled with math and English.

Maybe there is something you want to get involved with but are hesitant because you were the lone chica. Or it’s that you don’t think you will be good at it. Or perhaps you had no idea what an activity truly entailed. No need to fret—we have the 411 on two of the most popular post-school pursuits so you can try to determine this new school year if any makes you feel like you want to try. Plus once you know just what you want, we bet others follow you. With this new determination, you’ll start out solo and meet a new bestie there in no time.

Dance

Even if all of your friends are big-time dance girls, you don’t know the difference between a ball change and thunder clap. Still, you want to dance this new school year? That’s super cool—it’s a great workout, mood lifter and so fun to move to the music. Then there are the cute clothes made just for flexibility. What’s more, there are a range of dance styles and classes to take, from jazz, to lyrical, ballet to hip hop, tap and more. Classes can be once a week or sometimes more and typically there is a recital at year end to show off all you know in a spectacular display of talent.

For girls who ultimately pursue dance big-time, there are dance companies—multiple classes at more advanced levels—to try out for and competition teams as well. But to start, sign up for just one style if you like—and give it a try.

Yoga

This meditative activity is good for your mind and bod. It is a fabulous low key workout, stengthener and toner. The equipment (mats and outfits) are oh-so-cute and yoga is a perfect way to chill after a day of school or a stressful exchange with siblings or hormonal friends. Plus yoga has a language, moves and poses all it’s own—think downward dog, tree, frog, warrior, half moon and more—so every pose or mantra you master will make you feel majorly successful. Another benefit: Many yoga spots have healthy juice and smoothie bars on site or nearby. Yum.

Customize Your School Supplies in Fabulous DIY Style

One of the best parts about going back to school is shopping for the rad new school supplies that you get to use in class, put up in your locker and carry around as swag in your backpack. Only problem? Typically others have been to the local spot for school supplies too or hit up the same online store you did so they’ve got the same stuff. No worries. You can personalize  your school supplies so they reflect you and your inner design star. Not only do you get to strut your style by customizing your school supplies but ultimately you can also identify what’s yours from those pesky people who love to “borrow” but not return.

Pens and Pencils

For starters, wrap pens and pencils in ribbons and top them with a character eraser or a faux fur pom-pom. Maybe consider color coordinating the ribbon with the accoutrement on top. Or use metal stamps to hammer designs into wood pencils or even “write your name.” Another idea? Download these pencil wraps in four different prints that fit perfectly on standard number 2 pencils. Just cut out and affix with a swipe of modge podge.

Books

Cover textbooks to make the perfect palette for favorite quotes, a poem, pics of friends or a sketch/drawing. Measure a piece of heavy duty paper—we especially like white and kraft color—that’s one inch longer and wider all around than your book when it’s open with both covers splayed out. Fold in sides of paper so that it is aligned on top and bottom of book. Fold over the covers of both books and tape to secure. You can also create fun book marks to keep track of your where you are in reading assignments. These downloadable ones that you add a decorative ribbon to work well on both textbooks and English class novels.

Folders

In addition, personalize your folders by marking up with strips of washi tape that comes in tons of fun colors and designs. Or go a more organized route with specialized printable labels that mark your subject front and center.

Yoga 101

We think yoga rocks! For starters we love how good it is for us—mind, body and spirit. Doing yoga helps build strength, stamina, mindfulness and makes us super focus, which is good not only for school but all of our activities too. Plus we live for the clothes that come with it. The cutest and comfiest leggings are de rigueur so not only do you look super stylish but you also feel so good. They’re also so inspiring to go into a downward dog and chant a mantra. Never done yoga (only wear the clothes?)—we gotchu. Here, a super quick 101 to bring you up to speed so now you can look and play the part.

  1. Create a cool space to set the mood. Even if you don’t have a dedicated room, find a space in your home, like a little nook by a window with a view of a tree that makes you feel calm, and set up there.
  2. Get geared up. A yoga mat defines your space and don’t need to be pricey. Keep a water bottle nearby to hydrate and wear comfy, stretchy and cute clothes to feel inspired.
  3. Choose a mantra. The word mantra actually comes from the Sanskrit language that translates to “instrument of sound.” It is a word, sound or phrase that makes you happy or content and helps to focus during yoga or mediation. Some suggestions? Sweet, sweet life, yuuuum, friends are for life to name a few!
  4. Know basic poses. Even if you’re not one of our Sugar Lulu dance girls, that doesn’t mean you can’t strike a fabulous yoga pose. To familiarize yourself with some of the basic poses and techniques there are tons of books out there or just simply search on line. Some of the key terms to check out: Child’s Pose, Mountain Pose, Downward Dog, Warrior, Tree Pose, Bridge Pose (think back bend with no hands!), Triangle Pose, Seated Twist and Cobra.

Namaste.

Summer Accessories

It’s soooo fun and freeing getting dressed for summer days: breezy dresses, short shorts, tanks and tees—we love it all! But what we love even more? The accessories that go with them. Think about it…sure you can wear bling and more during the other seasons, but summer, without it’s long sleeves and pants to the ground, means you can show them off even more.

  1. Charms. Whether on bracelets, necklaces, anklets or rings, these little details say a lot about you. We love them because they can be anything, from pets, to school supplies, books, sports, travel destinations, fashion, accessories, initials…the list goes on and on. Look for them everywhere from your fave retail spot, online, or even make them yourself.

  1. Sunglasses. Yes the sun can be bright during fall, spring and winter, but during summer you need a good pair of sunnies. The sun is strongest then, so it’s uber important to protect your eyes, of course, but you also really need them to go with whatever outfit you are sporting as they are THE perfect summer accessory!

  1. Beach/pool bag. You absolutely canNOT go out for a day of splashing summer sun with all your supplies tucked under your arm or in any ole bag. You’ve got to tote your towel, sunscreen, hat, change of dry clothes, even a reading book into a cute bag that says you are rocking the day and the look. Choose one that’s waterproof and in a super fun color or a fabulously traditional one made of straw that may have some pretty flowers or other cool designs stitched on.

  1. Towels. You spend so much time choosing the right bathing suit or other pool/beach side outfit, when the canvas you are sitting on matters too! Your towel! Round ones with fun sayings, patterns or even made to look like fruit (think an oversized watermelon) are all the rage and we love them. There’s also the standard rectangle ones that come in all comes of designs and patterns too—our advice is to look for oversized ones so you can share with friends.

  1. Tattoos. Temporary body art adds a little glitter and a lot of fun to an outfit. Wear them proud on your arm, snake one delicately around your ankle of place on in an unexpected spot like on your tummy that peeks through a bikini or try smaller delicate ones made for your face, like a sprinkling of hearts or stars on your cheekbone.

Birthday Gifts for Besties

Birthday party invites are super fun to get but attending with an original gift in hand can be super tricky to maneuver. Yep, we are sure that lots of your girlies will love a cute Brandy shirt as much as the next (we do!), but sometimes, especially for your besties, you want to kick it up a notch.

So, we say, instead of looking for that one perfect something, why don’t you get a few items that would make perfect sense together in a basket? Now, don’t worry, we’re not suggesting those few items are each at the top of your budget. Instead consider less pricey things that she would love and get her more of them. Then you can wrap them all together in a cute container or just in some colorful fabric or cellophane for an equally fabulous presentation.

If your soul sister is obsessed with spas, perfecto. Put together a package that will leave her spending hours pampering herself: get (or make) a yummy scented bath balm, some lotions, a mani/pedi set with some fun nail colors, some facial masks and of course a cute hair band to keep her locks off her face.

If fashion is her thing, go for accessories overload! Think of everything from hair ties, sunglasses, necklaces, bracelets, rings, tattoos and socks. If you want to add to it with a substantial item, think about a jewelry armoire or a decorative box in which she can hold some of the gear—and that can double as a spot to place the goods when you wrap them up.

For a beauty girl, shower her with makeup. Lip glosses, eye shadows and liners, mascara, blushes, bronzers, brushes and nail polishes. And don’t make them all full size—if there are some things you know she’s never used, look for them in trial containers so she can test out a few new treats. Put it all in a box or a basket that she can set out for display.

Or, if your bestie rocks a bunch of different desires, then get a basket that mixes it all up from art supplies to fashion bits, stuff to decorate her room and more!

Whatever you decide, don’t forget to include a card that comes straight from your heart.
