Tips to Take the Perfect Picture

You superstar instagramers probably don’t need us to give you tips to take the perfect picture for your feed…but maybe your mom or bff who you make take so many of  your shots could use a little schooling on the subject. We are happy to help. Here, some info and dos and don’ts on how, when and where to snap a shot. Use these tips to take the perfect picture this holiday season and beyond!

Use the right camera is the most fundamental of tips to take the perfect picture

Don’t take photos in Instagram app. Use the camera on your phone or a digital camera

Shoot in natural light

Do, when possible, shoot in natural light, meaning outdoors rather than indoors or by a door or window.

Wait for the best time

Do try to wait for the “best light” times of day—early morning and late afternoon—to avoid shadows and sunny overexposure. Overcast days are very good days to shoot as well.

Make shots horizontal

Do take horizontal pictures for easy editing later.

Don’t shoot in square

Don’t take shots in square mode because it limits editing capabilities.

Take multiple shots

Do use bursts or rapid fire snapping to capture the best expression/moment.

Shoot multiple angles

Do take shots from different angles to get the right one.

Consider the background

Do choose your background wisely. Shoot against a white or solid background. Shoot against a carefully chosen graphic background. Blur the background in a crowd, against buildings, in nature etc (or do after the fact in editing app).

Edit your pics

Do go beyond Instagram filters to edit photos, like VSCO, Snapseed, TouchRetouch and AfterFocus.

Know that blue pics get more likes

Do adjust temperature when editing If the lighting is yellow, to be a bit more blue.

Hone in

Don’t be scared to focus on a point of interest, whether you, an accessory, a product etc.

Make shots balanced

Do use symmetry in your shots to establish focal point.

Focus on subject

Don’t forget to tap on frame to lock focus and exposure—iPhones tend to overexpose shots so this way it won’t blow out color that you cannot fix in editing

Master the selfie

Don’t mess up selfies. If taking one, always hold camera with the same hand as your “good” side!

Go beyond the selfie

Do take self-portraits or portraits rather than selfies only. If no one is around to snap your picture, use a tripod and a timer and be your own creative director!

Plan your shot

Do think about composition. Think of your photo in thirds—“separate” it into three vertical areas. This will help know what’s in the frame and how the focus can either be center, right or left

Fashion from the top

Do consider shooting from a birds-eye view to bring outfit into view while highlighting accessories

Halloween Party Planning 101

When everybody is planning their candy scoring route, you’re knee-deep in Halloween party planning 101. You are all about bringing the joys of trick-or-treating indoors for a festive celebration with your bffs.

Halloween Party Planning 101 Decor

Let’s start with décor. You must set out a jack-o-lantern or two on your front steps. That not only sets the tone, but tells guests they are in the right place. Take the time to carve them—look for tools and designs at your local pumpkin patch or market where you’ve purchased these orange orbs. Or check online for decorating ideas to make the most fabulous designs. Then get busy hanging any kind of skeletons or ghosts—you can make a boo-tastic one yourself with a pillow case and an oversized rubber band—and suspend them from clear fishing wire. And there’s so much more. Your style can also be part of the decor with Halloween inspired leggings and tops that get you in the spirit!

Halloween Party Planning 101 Activities

For activities, we’re fans of mini pumpkin decorating (so your friends can take theirs home), baking stations for coconut ghost macaroons, even good old-fashioned bobbing for apples. Just make sure you plan a few stations to keep your guests entertained. And make sure you’ve got the lights dimmed, some battery operated candles lit, monster mash music playing and, potentially, a movie like Transylvania or the Wizard of Oz projected on a wall.

Halloween Party Planning 101 Food

You can also get super creative with the food and drink you serve…anybody up for a little spaghetti and red sauce? Somehow it takes on a bit more gore and drama on this night. Or freeze blueberries in an ice tray with red and yellow food coloring, then serve them in a punch bowl for major googley eyes. Why serve any old hot dog in a bun? Slice out a sliver of the outer skin on the top of one side and make a few slices across the length of the hot dog—pour on a little ketchup in a bun to make it look like a bloody hot dog finger. It’s so yuck it’s yum!

Halloween Party Planning 101 The Candy!

The for the piece de resistance? The candy, of course. Take a hint from our favorite candy bars—varying heights and width of containers can hold everything from M&Ms and licorice bites (okay to have unwrapped candy at your house; just provide small plastic bags and scoopers) to the sought after traditional wrapped mini candy bars that friends would have had to walk the neighborhood for. Set it out but cover it with a piece of black velvet and do the final reveal at the end of the night.
